Upmo’s East Lothian community gardening project

Upmo’s East Lothian community gardening project has had another successful season. The North Berwick allotment was started seven years ago, when we were kindly given permission to use some privately owned land. Since then, the project has flourished and this year it picked up momentum with the help of Sue Armstrong, a local resident who has injected some fresh energy in helping us develop the project. The team worked in collaboration with The Action Group, who support the students in the sessions.

There are now five plots and the students grow a range of vegetables and fruit as well as building beds and frames for the plants. It was a bumper harvest this year with the exception of the broccoli which was unfortunately eaten by caterpillars! We finished off the season with a BBQ for students, parents and the newly established volunteer group, ‘Friends of Upmo’, residents from the local community who are supporting the project. Awards were given out for all that was accomplished during the year. A big thank you to everyone who was involved and we look forward to another fruitful season in 2019.
