Communication on behalf of Upmo's Board of Trustees

9 October 2020

Dear Upmo staff, students, families and supporters

Joshua Barton

In 2006, Josh had the vision, determination and core beliefs to create Upward Mobility (Upmo) to support those with learning difficulties and autism by delivering a range of creative workshops, educational activities and vocational programmes in Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian.

Josh was driven by a desire to help Upmo students develop life skills, increase confidence, reduce their reliance on carers and possibly even move to independent living.

After leading Upmo for 14 years as Managing Director, Upmo’s reputation as a sector-leading organisation and respect for its services have grown significantly, through offering an innovative and unique student experience.

It is not surprising for Founders to hand over the reins of an organisation to realise its next stage of development. In September 2020, following a period of planned transition, Josh stepped away from the charity to focus on new opportunities outwith Upmo.

Josh has played a key role in Upmo’s growth and success and we would like to offer him our warmest thanks for dedication and commitment during his time as Managing Director.

We take this opportunity to wish Josh similar success with his future endeavours.

Yours sincerely,

Eric Mitchell, Chair

on behalf of the Board of Trustees
